Day 2 | The Meek \ James 3:13-18

"Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace." - James 3:13-18 ESV

Day 1 | The Meek / Ps. 37

Psalms 37 (English Standard Version):

1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers;

    be not envious of wrongdoers!

2 For they will soon fade like the grass

    and wither like the green herb.

3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;

    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

10 In just a little while, the wicked will be no more;

    though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.

11 But the meek shall inherit the land

    and delight themselves in abundant peace.

21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back,

    but the righteous is generous and gives;

22 for those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,

    but those cursed by him shall be cut off.

27 Turn away from evil and do good;

    so shall you dwell forever.

28 For the Lord loves justice;

    he will not forsake his saints.

They are preserved forever,

    but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land

    and dwell upon it forever.

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;

    he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;

    he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,

    because they take refuge in him.

Day 7 | Those Who Mourn \ 2 Cor. 7:7-13a

“and not only by his (Titus) coming but also by the comfort with which he (Titus) was comforted by you, as he (Titus) told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more.  For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.  As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. Therefore we are comforted.” - 2 Corinthians 7:7-13a, parenthesis added for context

Day 6 | Those Who Mourn / Rom. 8:26-27

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.  And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” - Romans 8:26-27 ESV

Day 5 | Those Who Mourn \ John 14:1-4

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.  In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.  And you know the way to where I am going.” -John 14:1-4 ESV

Day 4 | Those Who Mourn / Rom. 5:1-5

"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,  and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,  and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." - Romans 5:1-5 ESV

Day 3 | Those Who Mourn \ John 11:28-37

"When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, 'The Teacher is here and is calling for you.'  And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.'  When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.  And he said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him, 'Lord, come and see.' Jesus wept.  So the Jews said, 'See how he loved him!'  But some of them said, 'Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?'" - John 11:28-37 ESV

“Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.  Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.  But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.'  Martha said to him, 'I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.'  Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,  and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?'  She said to him, 'Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.'” - John 11:17-27 ESV

"Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box,  and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. Day 6 | Poor in Spirit \ Matt. 11:25-30

You can listen to the DevoPod on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play.

"At that time Jesus declared, 'I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.  All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.'" -Matthew 11:25-30 ESV

Day 5 | Poor in Spirit / 1 Peter 5:6-9

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,  casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world." - 1 Peter 5:6-9 ESV

Day 4 | Poor in Spirit \ Eph. 4:1-7

"I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—  one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift." - Ephesians 4:1-7 ESV

Day 3 | Poor in Spirit / James 4:1-10

"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.  You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.  You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.  Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?  But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." - James 4:1-10

Day 2 | Poor in Spirit \ Phil. 2:1-11

"So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,  but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,  so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - Philippians 2:1-11 ESV

Day 1 | Poor in Spirit / 2 Corinthians 12:5-10

"On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses—  though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.  So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.  But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 2 Corin. 12:5-10 ESV

Welcome to the DevoPod

Welcome to the daily devotional in podcast form, known as the DevoPod.  My goal is to make taking time to really be in God’s Word easy for you, the listener.

Whatever you are doing right now, you can stop and focus on God and His Word for just a few moments today.  You can mentally focus on your Spirit by just clicking play and listening.  Take just 5 minutes out of your day to allow growth and replenishment.  Let's take the focus of the chaos and hurt of the physical world around you and place that focus on Jesus, our Redeemer and our anchor in the storm.

My goal is to make taking time to be in God's Word easy and convenient for you, the listener.

A long, time-consuming devotional time is often unpractical and isn't necessary to refocus your attention from walking in the flesh to walking in the Spirit.

Each weekday, we will take about 5 minutes to read a short Scripture straight from the Bible, take a quiet moment to talk to God through prayer, and I'll even give you a question so that you can make His Word personal in your heart and life.

I hope you will make DevoPod a small part of your daily life.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this way!

God bless,
